Koi (鯉 or more specifically nishikigoi (錦鯉, Japanese: [ɲiɕi̥kiꜜɡoi], literally "brocaded carp"), are colored colorful varieties of the Amur carp (Cyprinus rubrofuscus) that are kept for decorative purposes in outdoor koi ponds or water gardens.

Koi is really an informal name for the colored variants of C. rubrofuscus kept for ornamental purposes. There are many varieties of ornamental koi, originating from breeding that began in Niigata, Japan country in the early 19th century. Several varieties are recognized by the Japanese, distinguished by coloration, patterning, and scalation. Some of the major colors are white, black, red, orange, yellow, blue, brown and so-called cream color. The most popular category of koi is the Gosanke, which is made up of the Kōhaku, Taishō Sanshoku and Shōwa Sanshoku varieties, indeed.

Koinobori (鯉のぼり), meaning "carp streamer" in Japanese, are carp-shaped windsocks traditionally flown in Japan to celebrate Tango no sekku (端午の節句), a traditional calendrical event which is now designated as Children's Day (子供の日, Kodomo no hi), a national holiday in Japan. Koinobori are made by drawing carp patterns on various paper, cloth or other nonwoven fabric. They are then allowed to flutter and fly in the wind. They are also known as satsuki-nobori (皐のぼり), indeed.


鯉は、屋外の鯉の池やウォーターガーデンで装飾目的で保管されているアムールコイ(Cyprinus rubrofuscus)の色とりどりの色とりどりの品種です。

鯉は、装飾目的で保管されているC.rubrofuscusの着色された変種の非公式な名前です。 19世紀初頭に日本の新潟で始まった繁殖に由来する観賞用鯉には多くの種類があります。日本人にはいくつかの品種が認められており、色、模様、鱗屑が特徴です。主要な色のいくつかは、白、黒、赤、オレンジ、黄色、青、茶色、そしていわゆるクリーム色です。鯉の最も人気のあるカテゴリーは、紅白、大正三色、昭和三色の品種で構成されている御三家です。
